The 24th Annual St Gregs College Sportsman Dinner

The 24th Annual St Gregory’s College Sportsman’s Dinner was held at the school last Friday night, and once again it was a cracker. Each year, the Committee that organises the dinner are faced with the arduous task of going one better and this year was no exception with dozens of Athletes, Sports administrators and even the odd Commentator turning up to regale the guests with their stories... This year’s Celebrity Guest was an Old Boy of the College, Alex McKinnon. Suffering such a high profile spinal cord injury several years ago, has meant that Alex had a lot to tell, from the moment the injury occurred to his steady but non-the-less remarkable recovery, to just last week marrying his teenage sweetheart. I’ve got to say I was extremely impressed with this young man and how he has been able to now be in a position to influence a room of 700 plus people. Jimmy Smith put it best, if he was a religious pastor he would have had hundreds convert last Friday night. With Wakelings being a major sponsor of the night for all of the 24 years, what pleased me most was being able to ask Alex a question...”What is your most lasting memory of the college?”...as expected there is always more than one, however his memories of the Brothers, the Camaraderie and especially jogging down those steps in the college jersey onto the field as a member of the first 13 stood tall...hopefully Alex’s recovery continues to improve and he can once again, one day, do the same....
