Final Commodore

The final Commodore rolls off the production line in South Australia

Last Friday was a day tinged with sadness for the thousands of Holden customers, workers and supporters with the last Australian built Commodore rolling off the production line at Holden Elizabeth Plant in South Australia. Whilst we have known for some years now it seems surreal that the day has actually come and gone. I think Holden deserve a significant amount of praise for how they handled the closure for their workers with dignity and respect. It’s estimated that over 7 Million Holden’s (and the odd Toyota) were built in Australia at the Elizabeth Plant, as well as supporting suppliers and a broader industry base, this is a huge achievement. General Motors were forced to call for the closure amidst the perfect storm of Government regulation and tariff changes as well as the rising cost of manufacturing in Australia... So last week Holden joined Toyota, Ford and Mitsubishi as car companies that have closed in the past 10 years or so...what’s next for Holden? Well I can assure there are plenty of exciting things in store for Holden fans...some great product and some fantastic innovation is heading our way...it will be interesting to see how quickly we adapt to this new environment, but there is one thing for certain, I’m sure the Lion will continue to roar in Australia!
