The future of Automotive

Over the past few weeks we’ve been discussing electric cars and fuel types. There’s no doubt that coming at us at a rate of knots are choices like we’ve never encountered before. Sure we can argue about ‘range anxiety’ in electric cars, but that’s almost conquered now with most new entrants hitting circa 400 km’s in range. Then there is fuel choice, and unfortunately Australia has some of the poorest quality petrol in the world. Choices in government policy appear to have locked us into this fuel for the next 10 years or so limiting manufacturers from bringing highly efficient engines that rival EV in economies. But what’s down the track? Many experts agree the future of automotive lies in the things like ride share, subscription ownership models and autonomation. In theory at some stage in the future you’ll own your time in the car rather than owning the car. Meaning, you may have a suite of choices in cars. Monday to Friday might be a small city car, then on weekends your subscription might deliver to your door or workplace that rugged SUV for the trip away! There are companies, like GM in the United States, already piloting these types of services so they’re not too far away. So, what’s next? Well it’s most likely autonomous driving which opens up a whole other world of choice but also consequence… What would you choose?
